I am writing to address concerns you may have regarding COVID-19 and our parish’s response to this rapidly unfolding situation. But first, I want to assure you that you and your loved ones are in my prayers and that the clergy and staff at Mother of Sorrows are here for you, as always, during these uncertain times.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has temporarily suspended Masses until April 19, 2020, or otherwise extended. This extraordinary step was taken for the safety and well-being of us all until the coronavirus is no longer a threat. However, we continuously open our church for individual, private prayer and have the Blessed Sacrament exposed from 9am to 6pm daily Monday to Friday unless it is necessary to suspend it. Perhaps this is a time when we should pray more and get closer to God.
During this time, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez is encouraging Catholics to pray at home and participate in the Holy Mass via the internet. The Archdiocese will livestream daily and Sunday Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles via Facebook, @lacatholics, and at lacatholics.org/emergency/. Daily Mass will be livedstreamed at 12:10 p.m. in English, and Sunday Mass will be in English at 10 a.m. and Spanish at 12:30 p.m.
Finally, our parish will continue to rely on your financial support as we work to serve the many needs of our community in the coming weeks. So, if you find it in your heart to do so, we welcome your offerings. Please consider sending your weekly contribution to the parish by mail.
Remember, when St. Pope John Paul II encouraged us to “be not afraid,” he was not implying that we did not have anything to be afraid of. Rather, he was reminding us that our sights are set on heaven, on God, and on His holy will. I am confident that our loving community will embrace this crisis as Christian stewards and love one another sacrificially, check on neighbors, and make sure the most vulnerable have the necessities to get through this.
Please join me in praying for the repose of those who have died, for the recovery of those who are sick, for the strength of healthcare workers and caregivers, and for an end to this global health crisis.
